Tuesday this week was #africaday and to celebrate, today’s inspos are tackling the increase of poverty in South Africa as a result of COVID-19. For context, a study by the United Nations Development Program shockingly revealed that as many as 34% of households are in danger of becoming vulnerable to poverty.

Two inspiring Gen Zeders decided to address the spiralling situation and founded the Kwanisa Foundation @kwanisafoundation . Kopano Tsengiwe and Nwabisa Mpotulo, both 25 from Johannesburg, started delivering food packages to families in need since South Africa went into lockdown in March 2020.

The parcels contained non-perishables such as canned goods and essential hygiene products like toothpaste.

Kopano and Nwabisa both volunteered for the non-profit Blue Palm during their time at university, and the experience inspired them to create their own foundation.

Though already off to a great start, the Kwanisa Foundation has future plans to empower the youth of South Africa, as well as reaching out to other parts of the continent. They offer skills development workshops to underprivileged schools, and support young adults in child headed homes and orphanages through the university application process.

We would like to thank Kopano and Nwabisa for everything they’ve already done, and look forward to seeing the difference they’ll no doubt make in the future.
